Great South Bay Oyster Project
This summer and fall, the GenuTrace team will be volunteering with Save The Great South Bay to support its Great South Bay Oyster Project—specifically by cleaning and preparing oyster shells (spat‑on‑shell) — a critical step in restorative aquaculture.
Volunteers typically spend about an hour rinsing oyster crates, counting and measuring juvenile oysters, and ensuring that healthy spat are ready for reef planting.
Restorative aquaculture works: oysters are filter feeders that can each clean roughly 50 gallons of water per day, helping to reduce nitrogen pollution that fuels harmful algal blooms (source: Fire Island News & Great South Bay News) By increasing oyster and clam populations, SGSB aims to rebuild reef habitat, support fish populations, and strengthen the resilience of our shoreline.
GenuTrace is honored to contribute — helping grow the bay’s next generation of oysters while learning from proven models like New York City’s Billion Oyster Project and regional efforts closer to home.
“Growing up near the water, I’ve always believed that healthy ecosystems are the foundation of healthy communities. Joining the Save the Great South Bay Oyster Project allows me to give back in a tangible way — helping restore a bay that has given so much to so many,” said MeiLin Wan, Founder and CEO of GenuTrace.
“If you claim it, can you prove it?”™ With GenuTrace, you can.
