World Cotton Day, marked each October 7, has traditionally been a moment to celebrate cotton’s economic and social importance across the countries and communities that grow it. This year, that celebration sits alongside a quieter but consequential shift in the industry: the move from claiming where cotton comes from to being able to prove it.
For decades, origin claims in the cotton supply chain have rested largely on documentation. Certificates of origin, contracts, and supplier attestations have long formed the backbone of how brands, mills, and traders represent where their raw material was grown. That system worked reasonably well when trust between trading partners was high and supply chains were short. It is under considerably more strain now, and buyers, compliance teams, and consumers alike are asking a more pointed question: if you claim it, can you prove it?
